The Resuscitation Council UK has updated its guidelines for the primary survey. If you've been first aid trained in the past, you may remember DRABC — but recent changes have deemed this as unsatisfactory and now require further elaboration.
Introducing DRCABCDE
The updated primary survey is now DRCABCDE. Here's what each letter stands for:
What's Changed and Why It Matters
The key addition is the inclusion of Catastrophic bleeding early in the survey, along with Disability and Exposure at the end. These changes reflect a more thorough and systematic approach to casualty assessment, ensuring that life-threatening conditions are identified and addressed as quickly as possible.
As well as the primary survey update, there are other changes to the Resuscitation Council UK guidelines that affect how first aid is taught and practised. If you'd like to learn more about all the latest updates and develop your life-saving skills, the best way is to attend one of our courses.
