What is the CSCS Green Card?
The CSCS Green Card — formally known as the Labourer card — is part of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS). It is the standard entry-level card for general site workers and labourers in the UK construction industry.
The card proves that you hold the minimum qualifications and health and safety training required to work on a UK construction site. The vast majority of sites operated by principal contractors require all workers to carry a valid CSCS card before they are permitted on site. Without one, you will typically be turned away at the gate.
The Green Card is specifically for workers who do not yet hold a recognised trade qualification. If you hold a relevant NVQ or trade-specific qualification, a different card may be more appropriate — the CSCS card finder at cscs.uk.com can confirm which card is right for you.
The 3 Requirements for a CSCS Green Card
You need all three before you can apply. There are no shortcuts — CSCS will not process an application without both the qualification and a valid CITB test pass.
Level 1 Health & Safety Qualification
The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment. An OfQual accredited, 2-stage qualification — Stage 1 is the online training, Stage 2 is the accredited assessment. National Skills Centre provides both.
We provide thisCITB HS&E Test Pass
The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives Test. Taken at an approved CITB test centre. This is a separate requirement run by CITB — not part of the Level 1 qualification. The result is valid for 2 years.
Included in Complete PackageCSCS Card Application
Once you hold the Level 1 certificate and a valid CITB test pass, you apply online at cscs.uk.com. You pay the card application fee directly to CSCS. The card is typically issued and posted within a few days.
Included in Complete PackageStep-by-Step: The Full Process
Follow these steps in order. Completing them out of sequence — for example applying for the card before your CITB test has been processed — will delay your application.
Check you need the Green Card
Before you start, confirm the Green Labourer Card is the right card for your role. It is designed for workers who do not yet hold a recognised trade qualification. If you have an NVQ or trade cert, a different card may apply. Use the card finder at cscs.uk.com if you are unsure.
Complete Stage 1 — the online Level 1 training
Purchase the Level 1 qualification and get instant access to the Stage 1 online training. Work through the course modules at your own pace — there is no time limit and it can be done on any device. Most learners complete Stage 1 within a few days. Each module has knowledge checks built in throughout.
Complete Stage 2 — the accredited Level 1 assessment
Once you have finished Stage 1, contact National Skills Centre and we arrange your Stage 2 online assessment. Stage 2 is the accredited exam taken in test conditions. Before sitting it, watch the instructional video we provide — it explains the format and significantly reduces the risk of failure. Pass Stage 2 and you receive your Level 1 certificate.
Pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test
Book and sit the CITB HS&E Operatives Test at an approved test centre. The test is 50 multiple-choice questions covering construction health, safety, and environmental practices. It takes around 45 minutes. You must pass before you can apply for your CSCS card. If you choose our Complete Package, we arrange your test centre booking for you.
Apply for your CSCS Green Labourer Card

The Green Card is valid for 5 years.

Common Questions
Straight answers to the questions we get asked most.
?How long does it take to get a CSCS Green Card?
How long does it take to get a CSCS Green Card?
It depends on how quickly you complete each stage. The Level 1 online training is self-paced — most people finish Stage 1 within a few days. Stage 2 (the assessment) is arranged once you complete Stage 1. The CITB test can usually be booked within a couple of weeks at an approved test centre. Once you hold both the Level 1 certificate and a valid CITB test pass, the CSCS card application itself is processed online. In total, most people complete the full process within 4–8 weeks, though it can be done faster.
?How much does it cost to get a CSCS Green Card?
How much does it cost to get a CSCS Green Card?
There are three costs involved if you go the DIY route: the Level 1 qualification (£99 with National Skills Centre), the CITB HS&E Test fee (currently around £22.50 booked via citb.co.uk), and the CSCS card application fee (currently £36 at cscs.uk.com). That's approximately £157.50 in total. Alternatively, our Complete Package covers all three for £200 — including us arranging your CITB test booking and supporting you through the card application.
?Do I need the CSCS card before I can work on a construction site?
Do I need the CSCS card before I can work on a construction site?
Most UK construction sites require workers to hold a valid CSCS card before they are permitted on site. While the CSCS scheme is not a legal requirement in itself, the vast majority of principal contractors and site managers enforce it as a site rule. Without a card, you are likely to be turned away at the gate.
?What is the CITB HS&E Test and where do I take it?
What is the CITB HS&E Test and where do I take it?
The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test is a multiple-choice test that assesses your knowledge of construction health, safety, and environmental practices. It is run by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and taken at an approved CITB test centre. There are test centres across the UK. The Operatives test (required for the Green Card) is 50 questions and takes around 45 minutes. You must hold a valid CITB test pass before applying for your CSCS card.
?Can I get a CSCS card without the Level 1 qualification?
Can I get a CSCS card without the Level 1 qualification?
No — for the CSCS Green Labourer Card, the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment is a mandatory requirement. You cannot substitute it with another qualification for this specific card. You also need a valid CITB HS&E Test pass. Both are required before you can apply.
?How long is the CSCS Green Card valid for?
How long is the CSCS Green Card valid for?
The CSCS Green Card is valid for 5 years. Before it expires, you will need to renew it. Renewal requirements may change over time — check cscs.uk.com for the current renewal process when your card is approaching its expiry date.
?What if I already have the Level 1 qualification — do I still need the CITB test?
What if I already have the Level 1 qualification — do I still need the CITB test?
Yes. Both the Level 1 qualification and a valid CITB HS&E Test pass are required for the Green Card application. Holding one without the other is not sufficient. The CITB test result is only valid for 2 years, so if you completed it a while ago you may need to resit it.
?Is the Green Card the right card for me?
